There’s something wonderful about being given a gift that is imaginatively and personally wrapped. The excitement of discovering what lies within a package sheathed in unusual paper with crisply folded corners, a pretty bow and card is a pleasure.

I recently received a small present lovingly wrapped in handmade paper from Nepal and tied with a simple brown cord. My friend made the card to match. I was delighted by the colors and textures of the wrapping and am saving the bits and pieces for some to-be-decided future project. Her creative wrapping enhanced my experience of opening the package, and has gone on to inspire one of my color palettes!

Even when I’m working with paper and paint textiles seem to be on my mind. This little group of monoprints was created by using paper strips woven together.

The top two prints are impressions of weaving and were made by inking and weaving paper strips together and placing them on the plate to print.

For the next two, I cut up old prints that I wasn’t satisfied with into strips and woven them together. You can see that I’d experimented with printing knit fabric in these two. I like the combination of knit and woven in the same piece.

The mouthwatering sherbert-y shades of mango, raspberry, citrus, watermellon and banana give them a cheerful and summery feel.

Last month when I visisted Yin Yu Tang, I plucked fallen ginko leaves from the surrounding lawn and brought them home for inspiration. I like the way they change hue when placed on different sheets of colored paper. I find their shape and ridges delightfully graceful.

I’m not a person who wears, or owns, a lot of pink clothing or things. I love pink, but mostly as I find it in nature where earthy tones remove it from the baby doll, cotton candy realm. I had fun playing around with these summery palettes. Enjoy!

Here’s bit of nostalgic cheer for you on a mid-winter day. Trolls – marvelous malleable hair, cheery faces and stubby bodies that are hard to make clothes for and the only dolls I liked to play with when I was little (forget baby dolls!). I snapped this photo of a tin dish from a child’s tea set while tooling around Reykjavik. Makes me happy that kids still love trolls.

I was feeling quite blue when I woke up yesterday morning after a day of pouring rain, to find another grey day and a dusting of snow on the frozen earth. It’s mud season in Vermont and you take your joy where you can find it. I found mine in my email in-box;  photos from my ever-optimistic friend Pennie. Here’s a snippet of what she wrote:

“This beautiful amaryllis bloomed three days ago. I just had to bring it outside to photograph it while big fluffy flakes of snow fell from the sky. I like how my old blue house and crooked windows provided the backdrop and let the snowflakes “pop”. Wouldn’t it be fun to have snow and flowers in the same season?”

I hope these photographs cheer you up as much as they did me!
