There’s something wonderful about being given a gift that is imaginatively and personally wrapped. The excitement of discovering what lies within a package sheathed in unusual paper with crisply folded corners, a pretty bow and card is a pleasure.

I recently received a small present lovingly wrapped in handmade paper from Nepal and tied with a simple brown cord. My friend made the card to match. I was delighted by the colors and textures of the wrapping and am saving the bits and pieces for some to-be-decided future project. Her creative wrapping enhanced my experience of opening the package, and has gone on to inspire one of my color palettes!

Purple and orange color combinations usually conjure up visions of team sport uniforms.Ugh! When looking into my garden for color inspiration I find this is far from true, and am delighted by these two shades used in the same color palette.

Summer is whizzing by. The Swiss chard in my garden is ready for picking. The colors of the stems against the glossy green leaves are intense! I love playing with them against a variety of colored backgrounds.

There’s nothing like the taste of the succulent Amish peaches discovered last Saturday morning at the farmer’s market in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. The handspun and dyed yarns across the way echoed the peach’s tones. And the daylilies now in bloom share their creamy shades too.

Between 1935 and 1943 the WPA’s (Work Progress Administration) Federal Arts Project printed over two million posters in 35,000 different designs to stir the public’s imagination for education, theatre, health, safety and travel. Many of the Posters were for our National Parks. The artists and actual dates of production are unknown. The original posters, distributed to local Chambers of Commerce, were produced for internal marketing only and not for sale.

I love the WPA style and vibrant colors used in the posters. What better time of year to highlight National Parks, than summer? So here are a few posters that inspired me to create color palettes. To learn more about the posters or buy them, click here.

Even when I’m working with paper and paint textiles seem to be on my mind. This little group of monoprints was created by using paper strips woven together.

The top two prints are impressions of weaving and were made by inking and weaving paper strips together and placing them on the plate to print.

For the next two, I cut up old prints that I wasn’t satisfied with into strips and woven them together. You can see that I’d experimented with printing knit fabric in these two. I like the combination of knit and woven in the same piece.

The mouthwatering sherbert-y shades of mango, raspberry, citrus, watermellon and banana give them a cheerful and summery feel.

I’m captivated by the color and texture of these sea urchins piled in an electric blue  plastic tub. The urchin’s shape could inspire a new textile design!

Those of you who have been following my color palette inspirations for a while already know about my fascination with rust. I was ecstatic while poking around The Raven’s Nest (a dwelling literally made of old metal)  at seeing so many rusty colored shapes contrasting against other materials. The bright yellow-orange that runs through most of these palettes, seems to be the same color Icelanders paint their lighthouses. Here are a few of my favorites.

P.S. I hope you’re enjoying the longest day of the year. I for one, plan to enjoy every second of daylight today!

I don’t know if Icelanders drink more or less tea and coffee than folks from different places or not. But rather than hiding their pretty tea and coffee pots in cupboards,  I noticed many pretty collections on display in kitchens around the island, which in turn inspired these color palettes.

We discovered a breathtaking black beach on Iceland’s Snæfellsnes peninsula in the western fjords. Polished black pebbles rumbled beneath the pounding surf as they rushed onto the deserted shore.  Bits of brightly hued seaweed were left behind. I loved the contrast of the stark hard stone and the colorful organic seaweed.

Here in Vermont, in an effort to protect Lake Champlain and other waterways, a bill, which restricts the sale and use of fertilizers that contain phosphorus and nitrogen, was passed last week in the House and now moves to the Senate.

The bags of fertilizer I see sold at Agway seem pretty benign, but after viewing J. Henry Fair’s collection of photographs, titled Industrial Scars, showing devastation caused by fertilizer production, I am posting them here to further the conversation.

Personally I have a hard time visually reconciling that the fascinating textures and lush colors in Fair’s images represent environmental degradation. I can’t quite bring myself to see them as ugly even though I know that what I do see is wrong. I found myself compelled to use them for color palette inspiration.

Of his work, J. Henry Fair says, “As an artist with a message, one asks oneself: how do I translate my message to my medium such that it will effect the change I want?
At first, I photographed “ugly” things; which is, in essence, throwing the issue in people’s faces. Over time, I began to photograph all these things with an eye to making them both beautiful and frightening simultaneously, a seemingly irreconcilable mission, but actually quite achievable given the subject matter.”

He continues, “The word “fertilizer” evokes a pastoral image of grazing cattle transforming a sun-drenched field of grass into nutrients for crops, beckoning us back to simpler times. However, the super-productive modern agricultural system is fed by mineral phosphate, the principal American source being Florida, where its strip-mined extraction devastates vast areas of undeveloped wildlands, and ends with a dead zone in the ocean, where it finally comes to rest after wreaking havoc on the soil, watersheds and ecosystems in its path. “

“The process of making phosphate fertilizer begins with the surface mining of phosphate. Large areas are overturned to obtain the phosphate, which is processed with volumes of sulphuric acid, leaving large residues of radioactive, acidic waste, and producing large amounts of fluorine gas, which is extremely toxic to all animals.”

“Fertilizer plants belch a vast quantity of contaminants into the air and water, known toxicants to the cardiovascular, immune, respiratory, epidermal and reproductive systems of the human body.”

Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar (Kapalıçarşı) is a dizzyingly exotic covered market; a twisting labyrinth of stalls and shops selling spices, carpets, coral and turquoise jewelry, hand-painted ceramics, copperware, textiles, antiques, hookahs, amber prayer beads, inlaid weapons, icons, mother-of-pearl mirrors, candlesticks and mother-of-pearl inlaid weapons.

It is a spectacular melding of East and West, ancient and new, unexpected fragrances, unfamiliar sounds and curious tastes and of course vibrant color.

Today’s color palettes are inspired by some of those marvelous sights.
