There is something arresting and sensuous about Françoise Tellier-Loumagne’s photograph of a moldy orange. It evokes contradicting scents of sharp citrus and musty decay. It’s fascinating textural surface is both soft and velvety, glossy and firm. The shades of blue are unlike any mold that I have ever seen before. Tellier-Loumagne suggests using it as inspiration for embroidery.

I love the three dimensional patterns and colors of the frozen bubbles in the ice in this photo taken by Emmanuel Coupe. They would make a lovely textile pattern.

I’m on my way to The Outdoor Retailer trade show this week. I am excited to see all the latest and greatest outdoor gear and clothing that will be appearing in stores next fall, and to see sales samples of my various designs. I have a schedule filled with meetings with clients – current and potential, fabric vendors and industry friends.

I’ve been asked to be a judge for Project OR a student apparel design competition, similar to the reality show Project Runway. Students are handed a design brief the first morning of the show and then must conceive, design and sew a garment meeting the specifications of the design brief in just three days. It’s a great way to introduce young designers to the Outdoor market and vice versa. I’ll let you knoe how this goes when I return.

I’m captivated by the color and texture of these sea urchins piled in an electric blue  plastic tub. The urchin’s shape could inspire a new textile design!

I don’t know if Icelanders drink more or less tea and coffee than folks from different places or not. But rather than hiding their pretty tea and coffee pots in cupboards,  I noticed many pretty collections on display in kitchens around the island, which in turn inspired these color palettes.

Yesterday I was plowing through thousands of my digital photos looking for just the impossibly right shade of blue to use in a presentation. Unfortunately I didn’t find the hue I was searching for, but I did come across some blues that make my heart sing.

Because of the varying make up of cones and rods in our eyes we all perceive colors differently. Everyone can pretty much agree on what the color blue looks like. But in our mind’s eye can we all agree on envisioning the exact same shade of cornflower, or sky blue, or azure?

I’m in the business of naming colors, and blue is one of the hardest. There are so many shades of blue and not enough words in the language to describe them. Sky blue can vary from light to dark depending on the weather and time of day. When one thinks of ocean blue, do they see the waters off the Maine coast or Caribbean beaches?Delphinium blue depends on which garden variety your eye conjures, or if one even knows what a delphinium is!

What would You call the blues in the photos below? I’d be very interested in hearing your thoughts. Give it a shot and have fun!

Last Monday when I posted an entry titled “Color Inspiration – Iceland” I had no idea of the havoc the Icelandic Eyjafjallajökull volcano would play on travelers (some of whom are my friends) across the world.
Fascinated by the contrasts of fire and ice, the landscape of Iceland, satellite images and weather maps, I started googling for images of Eyjafjallajökull.
Once again, drawn to Iceland, I’ve put together some color palettes inspired by my web search. I encourage you to click on the links to see more than I could possibly show here!

© Poppy Gall 2010Color Inspiration – Iceland
The colors of Iceland are still embedded behind my eyelids when I close my eyes, flickering like a mini abstract art slide show. We arrived on the first day of summer on the Icelandic calendar – April 25, 2009. Bundled up in down jackets, mittens and hats, we roamed around Reykjavik before heading northward toward the Arctic Circle to ski among the fjords.
Iceland’s breathtaking landscape is a richly textured tapestry of water, ice, sand, rock, lichen and moss and a never-ending source of inspiration for artists. Public art  - sculpture, art installations and murals – is everywhere in Reykjavik. The museums and galleries are loaded with modern and folk art, photography and textile arts. Innovative music and film is born there. I applaud this national appreciation for the arts, one that encourages such a diverse and thriving artist’s community.
Expecting a mostly snowy, late-winter environment, I was pleased to find a broad range of colors, from cool to warm. Here are some color palettes inspired by what I saw. I

I was feeling quite blue when I woke up yesterday morning after a day of pouring rain, to find another grey day and a dusting of snow on the frozen earth. It’s mud season in Vermont and you take your joy where you can find it. I found mine in my email in-box;  photos from my ever-optimistic friend Pennie. Here’s a snippet of what she wrote:

“This beautiful amaryllis bloomed three days ago. I just had to bring it outside to photograph it while big fluffy flakes of snow fell from the sky. I like how my old blue house and crooked windows provided the backdrop and let the snowflakes “pop”. Wouldn’t it be fun to have snow and flowers in the same season?”

I hope these photographs cheer you up as much as they did me!

The shadows cast by the eggs give this composition interest

I also played around with the eggs I already had in the fridge…

Eggs4

All the eggs are organic and free range. I wonder if that’s part of the reason their color is so pretty?

It snowed lightly last night and I woke to a lovely surprise this morning; every branch and weedy stalk was tufted with the lightest puffs of snow crystals. It was as if someone had glued thousands of cotton balls to everything.

In the afternoon when the sun came out I took my camera with me while fetching the mail from our rural delivery mailbox. Most people think of the December color palette as comprising of blues, whites and greys. If you look closely color abounds.

PoppyGall Burrs

I’m fascinated by the long blue shadows of winter. These burdocks cast particularly nice shapes.

PoppyGall Rooster

This folky rooster whirly gig outside my studio cheers me up

PoppyGall-Chair

I still haven’t gotten the chairs in yet. I like the weathered colors against the snow.

PoppyGall-apples

Wild apples still on the tree are rich in mottled color.

This is the view from my mailbox. There are lots of colors in those mountains.

The straw color looks beautiful on the textured snow.
